8 Layer Rigid-Flex PCB with Break Away Panel

Printed circuit boards are primarily of two types— flexible printed circuit board and rigid printed circuit board. Rigid PCBs are the commonly known ones. However, flexible printed circuit boards can be made available in a variety of configurations, and hence find many applications across industries. They are also called flex boards or flexible electronics. Flex PCB manufacturers also offer rigid-flex circuit boards. As the name suggests, rigid-flex boards are a combination of rigid and flexible board technologies which enable a high spatial efficiency. They comprise a rigid board with multiple layers of flexible circuit substrates. As a rigid-flex PCB manufacturer, Rigiflex, offers a variety of custom PCB design orders with extremely dense layers.

In the SMT line, additional board materials are required to facilitate the assembly process. Flex breakaway panels are added to the PCB to ensure an all-inclusive assembly with high levels of accuracy. This prevents any type of distortion of odd-shaped PCBs on the conveyor system. At Rigiflex, we use tab routing to create the breakaway panels. The panels also ensure that the corners of the PCB do not sag during processes such as reflow or wave soldering. Once attached to the PCB, the breakaway panels remain intact throughout the assembly process. They are removed only at the final stage before the PCB is sent for testing and inspection.
